Contact Lenses

For some patients who need help with their vision, contact lenses can offer an ideal solution.

· Contact lenses are invisible—no-one need know that you are wearing them

· They can often provide better vision than spectacles—because they fit on your eye, distortion is minimised

· They’re convenient, especially if you take part in sports

Today contact lenses are worn by over 3,000,000 wearers in the UK alone!

Types of Contact Lens

Contact lenses come in many different designs and materials.  The particular design and material that is best for you depends upon factors like your prescription (what correction you need for your eyesight), your lifestyle and, of course, your budget. To begin to see just how wide the range is, look here. Expert advice is necessary to ensure you choose the best contact lenses for your needs.

Originally, nearly all lenses were spherical—that is, they had a single correcting power and so could only correct long sight or short sight. These are still the most popular today, but there are two other types now available which have made the convenience of contact lenses available to many more patients.

The first of these is the toric lens—this is the type of lens that can be used to correct astigmatism. The second type is the multifocal lens, which is the contact lens equivalent of  a bifocal or varifocal pair of spectacles, and so can be used by older patients (40+), who find that they need help with their vision when reading.

Disposable Lenses

Another great improvement has been the invention of disposable lenses. Previously contact lenses used to require careful cleaning between each use —today most types of lens are available as disposables—you wear them once, and then throw them away. These are likely to be more comfortable and less likely to cause infections or other complications than other types, as a fresh, sterile lens is used each time.
